Dentistry

Dental disease is the most common problem we see with 80% of dogs and cats over the age of three having dental disease requiring professional attention. Untreated dental problems can lead to bacteria entering the bloodstream, oral pain and tooth infections.

Regular professional cleaning is an important part of preventive health care for your pet. During your pet’s annual wellness exam, their mouth will be examined and determined if a cleaning is recommended.

During a dental cleaning your pet will be placed under general anesthesia. General anesthesia is necessary as it is the only way to be able to fully evaluate your pet’s mouth and clean all the teeth surfaces. Full mouth dental x rays are routinely recommended to be able to detect disease under the gum line and in the tooth root.

Ultrasonic and hand-scaling instruments are used to clean each tooth thoroughly above and below the gum line. The teeth are then polished to create a smooth tooth surface resistant to plaque build-up. Should advanced dental disease be detected that require extended therapy or extractions, they will be discussed with you.

Most dental extractions can be done at our hospital. For complicated extractions, root canals or advanced dental disease in our geriatric patients, referral to a boarded veterinary dental specialist may be recommended.
